Charles J. Wertswa Gunners Mate 3/c - Jersey City, NJ 1943-47
Edward Marsh Division 1 as a S 1/c and was killed when we were hit by a Japanese Kamikaze Submarine on January 12, 1945. He was the only sailor ever killed on the Mazama during WWII. 1944-45
Frank A. Rice Chief Radioman - Passed away on trip back from WestPac Cruise 1966 - Indian Ocean 1965-66
Gordon Simms First Lt. Served on-board for recommissioning in Orlando, Florida. Passed away in 2004. 1961 until '63 or '64
Herman Smith First Division Smitty was a recommissioning plank owner in 1961. Came aboard as BM3 in First Division and made 2nd Class before he left in 1963. Retired as Chief. Don't know if he made E-8 or E-9. Even when I was a Seaman, Smitty treated us well. He was a great guy. The way he was suffering, it was a blessing he passed away quietly. In talking to him, he was prepared to ship out. Best Regards, Paul

Bob Bettendorf 1st Division Bob came on board in the Mare Island draft out of Camp Shoemaker in Pleasonton, Ca. Served with Ralph Hann from Aug 1944 to June 1945. Passed February 6, 2010.

Edgar A. Schardein Lt. - Ed was a Mustang, who came aboard as a WO1 At the time of re commissioning, and raised to the Rank Of Lieutenant. He treated His Men fairly, and respectfully, so He was well Liked by the Enlisted Men, as well as His fellow Officers. In His Retirement, He would occasionally call and check on His Old Shipmates. Ed will genuinely be missed by those who knew Him best. We wish Him Fair Winds and a Following Sea. 1961-65
